2012 Daily Writing Challenge Post from THE RIVER OF STONES: 13 January

Shamanic Winds' Notes on Plant Identification

I am a new member at a Ning site called the WILDERNESS AWARENESS SCHOOL VILLAGE, and have just joined a group called "Native Plant Uses". I found a wonderful discussion in there that will help me get started on my Plant Identification by the contributer Charlie Davis. He wrote out a 'three step process' on how to start out:

1) Observation; 2)Comparision to a plant reference (field guide, technical flora, webpage reference, knowledgeable person); and 3)Confirmation that you have the correct identification.

This was the notes/my comments that I left about it:

This is a wonderful place for me to begin my studies in the 'Observance' of the many plants on the Land that I live on. I, too, have been taught to just 'look and sit' with the plant, do not try to define it by name, but to really use your all your senses and 'feel' what the plant has to teach and say to you. I have done this many times with Trees before -- for I am also a spiritual person when it comes to being outdoors in the Natural Habitat of any area, specifically my own land that I live and walk upon, where the Spirits roam, protect, and thrive in living where they grow at and what other species are around them that may either help or harm them as they continue to survive. Like for example, we have several different species of Pine and Oak here. Where the Oak tree, in observance, has given me much strength and endurance and courage to take with me in my life, the Pine brings out the aroma within the woods that refresh my memory and make it feel like 'Home'.

I love the idea of just choosing a small 'space' to observe. Time and time again as the seasons change and so does the plants, it is a great idea for seeing individually how that plant thrives at different times of the year, and then over the years as well for further investigations that also may lead to learning about how the changes of the environment as a whole affects them as well.

Thank you for this piece of information. Always starting with the 'basics' is the best way to go. Even as others grow in learning more about plant species and the such -- and they become 'experts' amongst the field -- always have the opportunity in going back to the fundamentals of identifications...for each time, as the environment changes, so do we as we grow and make changes in adapting to what is happening 'now' with that particular observance.

Shamanic Winds' "Animá" Musings
Those whom have been in the Craft know for a fact that the above quote from the Animá Center are true in how we live our daily lives in Paganism, Witchcraft, and in my case, Core Shamanism. Many of us unknowingly -- whether we are studying and/or practicing Witchcraft, are spiritual beings of whichever faith we follow, and even everyday people who live their lives the ways that they were either taught, brought up, or just 'live' -- already incorporate these ideals in our very lives!

When one begins their Witchcraft path, many read and research before actually understanding what they do in their life is in connection with how Witches live their lives as a whole. We can take the terms above and look at each individual word and/or phrase, and see what we can do to begin our Witchy practices on our own journeys.

Awakening to Our New Lifestyle:
When coming into a new notion of 'awakening' on our new spiritual path, we experience something very sacred and special in our lives. Something from deep within us in our unconscious has triggered our mind in changing, and an entire new world opens up to us. Like when we first awaken in the morning from a deep sleep from dreaming; many of us who are not always in-tune with our dreams don't realize that they are like Oracles, our dreams guide and help us interpret what is ahead of us on our new day. Dreams open up our reality to the Mysteries we seek of the unknown -- especially if, upon awakening, we faintly begin remembering parts of our dreams, pieces of the puzzle, like we may have seen a specific animal or person, or remember a place -- but we just cannot figure out what its meaning is, yet it strikes something inside of us to dig deeper into finding out why this appeared in our dream! So we are awakened to something new, are interested in seeking its deeper meaning, what it means to us in our life at that moment in time.

Maybe in our dream, we saw that of a big, round sphere that spun around and around, with each spinning turning different colors -- like those on a color wheel. This happened long ago in one of my dreams when I had first began reading about Witchcraft and learning about my new path I had been thinking on indulging in. What in the world had this spinning sphere mean? What was it trying to tell or show me? Why was it changing colors? What meaning to me did it have in my dream, and how could I learn from it in starting my new day? It became a great Mystery to me, and it really had challenged my mind -- and when something new comes about that I do not know about, it triggers my attitude sometimes and I get restless, and I need guidance in 'healing' that restlessness. If I go around like a mad woman all the time, my soul does not accomplish anything, for it is being torn in pieces and needs to be mended, healed.

So as a new Witch, we learn that we need to work on 'healing ourselves' -- so that we can carry on in helping to heal "our families, communities, and the natural world that we are all agents and extensions of... providing insights, skills and tools for living more healthy and conscious, meaningful and purposeful lives." We are like a Spider in the middle of its Web; as we extend ourselves outwards after we look through at ourselves inwards, we begin finding more ways of expanding our Souls in the deepening of our own spirituality on our new Path.
